(Page 3) Rotokare/Barrett Domain is named after the original name of the lagoon, Rotokare (‘rippling waters’) and well-known English pioneer Dicky Barrett. Barrett was gifted the domain from Maori chief Ererua Te Puke Ki Mahurangi when he married the chief’s daughter Wakaiwa (Rawinia) in 1828. Lake Rotokare. We’d heard from friends about the beautiful Lake Rotokare, where you can freedom camp right on the lake shore, and maybe hear kiwi calling at night as the whole area is a kiwi sanctuary surrounded by a predator-free fence.

Well established 4k trail around the lake, with side trails to the lake including a pontoon for bird viewing. (Max 30 people) with options for a more strenuous Ridgeline hike. Lake Rotokare Scenic Reserve, Sangster Rd. There are three designated spots for all types of freedom campers, but only 6 vehicles/tents allowed on site at any one time. There's 2 walks around the lake, where you may even spot a kiwi (make sure you walk at night and take a red torch to see them!) The camping spot is quite exposed so take some warm clothes! Rotokare Scenic Reserve is open all day, every day to the public.
